Fundraising With Documentary Film

The Reclaim Initiative and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law support women's livelihood programs.

The Reclaim Initiative and the LIFT project of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law have co-produced a documentary film on Siyath, a community-based organization dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged women. With a number of cottage-industry livelihood programs, such as making housewares from coconut fiber and farming vegetables and fruits, Siyath helps women create stable sources of income, enhancing their autonomy and independence .

Siyath was severely affected by the tsunami. Finished goods that were ready for sale, production machinery, and storage houses were all lost in communities along the southern coast where Siyath works. The LIFT project will use the documentary during the coming months to raise funds to help Siyath rebuild its programs and sustain its desperately needed work.

The film is based in large part on research conducted by the Reclaim team in Sri Lanka. Creating a link between donors and local organizations such as Siyath is one of the most direct ways Reclaim uses information to support equitable development.

Currently in post-production, we hope to have the film ready for distribution by early November, 2005.
